🔊 Columbus was born in Italy, but he lived in Spain. He was a sailor and he made sea voyages. Columbus was interested in India. He sailed east and brought back a lot of gold.

🔊 Columbus knew that the planet was round. He sailed west and arrived in Central America, in that way Columbus discovered the new continent.

🔊 Native Americans came to America from Asia. Before Europeans came to America, Native Americans lived in different tribes. They lived in wigwams, or wooden houses. Some Native Americans hunted animals for food, some went fishing. But the Europeans conquered their lands. And Indians fought with Europeans to defend their land. In the 19th century the US government decided that Native Americans must live on reservations. Today many native Americans or Indians still live there and keep their traditions. Indians remember their language, songs and tales. They have interesting festivals with music and dancing.

🔊 New York is an important centre of culture. It is situated in the northeast of the country and lies on some islands. But New York is not the capital of New York State. New York is famous for its skyscrapers, streets and avenues. Manhattan, the central part of New York, is an island. The Metropolitan Museum has a wonderful collection of paintings. Chinatown and Little Italy are also very interesting places to visit. They are famous for their restaurants with tasty food. Central Park is situated in Manhattan too. It is a green island in the middle of a busy city. Statue of Liberty, the famous symbol of the USA, stands on Liberty Island not far from New York.

🔊 The USA is one of the largest countries in North America. It has Mexico and Canada as neighbour countries in the south and in the north. The country has different weather in different parts of the country. It is so because the country extends from the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the islands of Hawaii in the Pacific, and from cold, snowy Alaska to sunny Florida in the southeast. There are 50 states that make up the USA. Alaska is the largest state of the country and Rhode Island is the smallest state of the country. The highest mountains are the Rocky Mountains and the longest river is the Mississippi. The capital city is Washington, D.C. It lies on the banks of the Potomac River. Its territory doesn’t belong to any state. The US government and its Congress are situated there.

США - одна из крупнейших стран Северной Америки. На юге и севере соседствуют Мексика и Канада. В разных частях страны разная погода. Это так, потому что страна простирается от берегов Атлантического океана до островов Гавайи в Тихом океане и от холодной, заснеженной Аляски до солнечной Флориды на юго-востоке.
